Day 25: Surprise!

NOTE: When this post goes live, I’ll be on a boat to Catalina Island for my birthday. But I wanted to make sure that I didn’t miss a day of posting celebrations, so I wrote this yesterday in preparation for today.

My boyfriend was due home from Catalina Island around 8pm. I had the day planned. I was going to clean the house, pick up his birthday cake in the afternoon, take a shower and get dressed all nice for him so when he got home, he’d be surprised by the decorations and the cake and me all gussied up.

Then, at 11:41am my sweetie pie calls. He’s already on the mainland and driving to my place!

I pause on the phone, furiously thinking of how I could still pull off the surprise.

He hears the hesitation in my voice and asks, “Is there something wrong?”

Ug. “You’re spoiling your surprise!” I say.

He says that’s OK. He picks me up and we go to Alberson’s to pick up the cake. They give me the cake in a clear container. That won’t do … he’s in the car and will see the photo on the cake! So they put it in a brown box for me.

While he’s parking the car … I live in a neighborhood where parking is often difficult to find … I go to my apartment and set up the cake. As he’s coming up the stairs I light the candles. (See picture above.)

He puts down his stuff and comes into the dining room. He looks at the cake and his eyes go big … he had no idea you could do that with a cake. He gives me a hug and a kiss and then notices the banner saying Happy Birthday on the window and his eyes go big again.

No one has done something like this for him in many years. He is happy. We take pictures of the cake and put it the frig for later.

Yes, the day didn’t go according to plan, but the important thing is I did get to surprise my boyfriend and he liked it.

That was one of my celebrations for the day. In fact, it was the best one! I love to see the delight in someone’s eyes when I give them something that was specially created just for them. It is in those moments that I feel like I’ve done my job right … letting the people I love know that I love them.

Another celebration for the day was opening my birthday presents from Mom. When I took the gifts out of the box, it looked like four gifts … but she had hidden gifts within the gifts, which added to fun. She have me a cute lavender top, which I’m wearing today, a plush baby dragon (I collect dragons), Angel Therapy cards (I collect divination devices), a book about angels, some charcoal colored leggings and a really cute blouse with cami from Liz Claiborne. A very nice selection that had me smiling from ear to ear.
