Weekday Wisdom, Episode 28

Vanquishing Mind Goblins #4: That Person Can Do It, But I Can’t

Do you believe that someone else can do something — like monetizing a hobby — but you can’t? That’s what we’re going to talk about in today’s Weekday Wisdom.

That person can do it, but I can't

For some reason, some people believe that making money from a hobby or doing something you love is possible for other people, but not them. That is the Mind Goblin we’re going to work on vanquishing today.

One of the fallacies that underpin this particular Mind Goblin is that somehow that person over there is more special than you are.

Why would that be? OK, if the other person is a highly skilled brain surgeon and you’ve never taken a college-level biology class, I’ll agree that you can’t do brain surgery but that person can.

However, when it comes to less specialized skills, such as entrepreneurship, you can totally do this. In fact, you can do it in a variety of ways. I focus on helping my clients monetize their hobbies, interests, and passions with information products. Not only have I been creating information products for more than 20 years, I’ve found that it is also an excellent way to monetize something you love without sapping the joy from it.

Basically, information products are a way of sharing information that already resides between your ears. You know this stuff, why not turn it into something that helps someone else do what you do? Anybody can do that!

Ok. Can anybody do it well? Yes. Some people can do it well on their own. Others need help. Ultimately, if you get the right help, you can do it well.

Another fallacy of this Mind Goblin is the Compare Game. The problem is, most people compare apples (themselves) to oranges (others with different experiences, training, etc.). If you’re constantly comparing yourself to other people, especially people that you admire, of course, you’re always going to come up short. You need to understand that there is no comparison.

No two people are alike. No two people have the same experiences. No two people have the same set of skills. We all bring something to the table that is uniquely our own. Sometimes that uniqueness is the amalgamation of all the things that we’ve experienced, and done, and learned over the course of our lives.

You can’t compare yourself and say, “Well, that person did it. But I can’t.” It’s completely wrong.

Think of it this way: If you can’t do it now, but it’s something you want to do, you can learn how to do it. 99 times out of 100, that is the truth. So, vanquish that Mind Goblin by:

  1. Refraining from comparing yourself to other people. And
  2. Learn what makes you unique and special and realize that whatever the “it” is that that other person can do, you can do it in your own unique way.

Get it? Can you do that for me? I know you can!

Monetize Your Hobby
If you would like to learn three ways that hobby entrepreneurs can earn money, a five-step process for creating an information product, and a list of several different types of information products that you can create, go over to CarmaSpence.com/monetizeyourhobby. There you can download a 20-minute video, where I discuss all those things. I’m not selling you anything at the end. It’s an information-packed mini-webinar that you can watch at your leisure. It will open your eyes to what is possible for you.

If this is something you want to do, you can do it. Either with the right training, the right mentorship, the right books, all of the above. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.

Remember:
Don’t box yourself in.
Spread your wings and fly.
Because you — yes you — are capable of more than you know.
