What this quote means in business:
I like to say that the more you appreciate, the more you have to appreciate. When you are grateful for your business as it stands right now, focusing on all the things about it that are going right, you will not only be happier, but you will become a magnet for opportunities to make things even better.
For example, a little more than three years ago I was in an abusive relationship, supporting the two of us with my business and barely making ends meet. I was on food stamps. I was unhappy. And it was in this dark time that I took up the habit of a gratitude journal.
Every morning, I would write down five things that I was grateful for in my life and business.
I’m not going to lie … it was really difficult to come up with five things to be grateful for. I was profoundly unhappy. But I stuck to it. That morning ritual was my island of light.
That island of light has grown so much bigger. I pulled myself out of that relationship and moved to Long Beach. I found a community of friends who provided a great deal of moral support as I went through my divorce.
And slowly, but surely, my business began to grow. I had to face some challenges along the way … including filing bankruptcy to get out from under all the debt I’d accumulated during my marriage.
And I’ve kept up the practice of gratitude.
Today I may not be where I eventually want to be, but I’m in an amazingly better place. And I am not only grateful for all I have now, but I also know in my heart and soul that it is gratitude that has helped me get here.
