Weekday Wisdom, Episode 8

Today I want to talk about how Frankenstein’s monster inspired me.

When I was an undergrad at UC Santa Cruz, I had this weird dream. I was in a Gothic castle and walking down a dark, stone, spiral stairway. The flickering lights of torches lit my way. Suddenly, Frankenstein’s monster came out from the darkness below.

He looked remarkably like Terence Stamp, albeit a very white, blood drained, Terence Stamp.

And I knew he was asking me about this girl who lived in my hall — I lived in the dorms at the time. He said to me:

“If you don’t inspire, you expire, right?”

I knew that he was asking me if you strangle someone you die. If you don’t breathe — inspire — you die — expire.

I said, “Yes.” And he went on his way.

I woke up from that dream thinking about what he had said.

If you don’t inspire you to expire.

And that’s so true. If you don’t inspire people — inspire joy, or anger, or action — you get forgotten. You expire.

So I’ve taken that as my motto with my business. And I always try to inspire people. If I inspire nothing more than a smile, I’ve done my job. Now, obviously, I want to do more than inspire a smile in my business, but that’s why I’m always thinking behind the scenes: “Am I inspiring some form of emotion or action with my words?”

And that is today’s Weekday Wisdom. I hope you go out and inspire people with your copy-writing, with your videos, with your social media posts. Inspire them to know, like, and trust you, so that they’ll open up their wallets and buy what you’ve got!

Remember:
Don’t box yourself in.
Spread your wings and fly.
You are capable of more than you know.
