Weekday Wisdom, Episode 53

Do you listen to your body? And, if you do, do you do what it asks you to do? That is what we’re going to talk about in today’s Weekday Wisdom.

Do you listen to your body?

Today we’re covering Question Number 13 … Oooh! On a Friday! … From the quiz that I gave you way back in Episode 40. Question number 13 is:

I listen to and honor the requests my body makes
for such things as a nap, a walk, green vegetables, hot soup.
True or false?

Now I know you listen to your body’s requests for things like ice cream, cookies, potato chips or French fries. Those are easy things. “Oh, yeah, yeah, my body wants French fries,” you’ll tell yourself. However, actually, no, it doesn’t. But it can feel like that because those are very addictive substances.

Listening to your body for the things that it needs in a healthy way, that’s kind of a learned behavior. Because we’re not used to doing that.

Some people start training themselves using a process called muscle testing, where they might approach a food or something and say, “My body wants this.” And then, they’ll get a yes or no answer. There are different ways to do muscle testing — some people use a pendulum, others use their fingers, and there are still more ways.

It doesn’t matter how you start learning how to listen to your body, but it’s something you really need to do.

Yes, it’s easier said than done. I know there are some times when my body is just screaming for a nap. But I’m at work and there’s no place to take a nap where it won’t look bad. So, I don’t take a nap. I end up sleeping on the bus on the way home. So, there are times when your body wants and needs something, and it’s not appropriate at that moment. But listen to your body and try to accommodate it as best you can.

This is especially true when it wants things like green vegetables or hot soup or whatever it is that will make you healthier. I started taking greens once a day. Sometimes I run out, and so I’ll go a couple of days without it. It’s amazing how I feel the difference when I don’t have my daily greens. I’ve learned that subtle feeling that my body wants these things.

The bottom line here is: Number one, are you aware of what your body is telling you in regards to making you feel better and being healthier? And number two, when you do notice those things, do you follow it?

One place that is really important is water. We need lots and lots of water. And the funny thing is, most people say, “Oh, Well, when I’m thirsty I drink.” But do you drink when you feel hungry? Did you know that sometimes your body will feel hungry when it really just wants water? So, if you’re feeling hungry at an odd time — it’s not normal mealtime for you — try drinking a glass of water and see if that helps.

Again, listen to your body when it pulls you towards things that are healthy. And then do it. Honor what your body’s asking you to do. Yes, it is easier to say than you do, but it is so worth it.

Remember:
Don’t box yourself in. Think outside that box!
Spread your wings and fly.
Because you — yes, you right there — are capable of more than you know.
