Power Thought: The Importance of Learning

What This Quote Means to Business:
Every day and every moment is an opportunity to learn and grow. We learn how to do things. We learn how not to do things. We learn about ourselves. We learn about each other. And each and every lesson that we learn helps transform us in a variety of small and cumulative ways.

The thing is, sometimes we learn a lesson that was not meant to be learned. We choose to take away something from an event that wasn’t the point of the event.

This is why two people can grow up in the same household, experience the same craziness, and one will be a stronger, better person and the other feels “broken” and needs to go through years of therapy. Same event, different reactions.

Although the quote above says that it is the learning that stays with us, I believe it is really our perspective, which determines the learning, that stays with us. And that’s good news.

We all have the power to change our perspective. We can choose to see the cup half empty. Or we can choose to see the cup half full. It really is a choice.

About a year ago, I chose to answer the question, “How are you?” with “Wonderful!” or “Fantastic!” regardless of how the day was actually going. Why? Because when I chose to be wonderful or fantastic, I chose to see my life as the wonderful work of art it truly is.

Take a look at any painting, and you will see a mix of both light and dark. The light illuminates the dark and the dark brings out the light. All the things that happen to you in life and business are part of that tapestry of light and dark that creates an image, vision that is your life.

I challenge you to see your life and all the things in it, good and not so fun, as the rainbow of colors the universe uses to create the work of art that you are. Tough times are the fires that forge us. Be grateful for them as much as the good times.
