“Rule of thumb: The more important a call or action is to our soul’s evolution,
the more Resistance we will feel toward pursuing it.”
~ Steven Pressfield, Do the Work
What this quote means to entrepreneurs:
This concept came up in a conversation yesterday and that inspired me to use it as today’s Power Thought quote.
In one of the last episodes of the first season of The Strain, which aires on FX, the characters made reference to the idea that what you most seek is hidden in the dark, which is another way of expressing this same concept.
Often, our resistance, our discomfort is the greatest right before a major shift. This is why so many people give up just short of the goal they were pursuing.
Therefore, when you are experiencing this kind of resistance, fear or discomfort, it might be wise to ask yourself: “Is this pain a sign of good things? Or a warning?”
What do I mean by this?
Physical pain is one way your body tells you something is amiss. You’ve got a cut, a bruise or some other not so good thing happening. That’s why you need to pay attention to pain, to check out what’s going on to see if its something you’ll survive or something you need to deal with.
Psychic and emotional pain can be the same way. Sometimes this kind of pain is telling you that you need to change the way you are being or doing. For example, you are in a relationship with someone … a friend, a business partner, a lover … but something isn’t right. You are uncomfortable in some way with the relationship. This is your soul’s way of communicating that either you need to stand up for yourself to change the situation or get out of it altogether.
So many times we ignore this natural, intuitive nudge from our soul. In fact, I’ve ignored it several times much to my detriment. It is my hope that I’m getting better at listening to these kinds of nudges from my soul.
Other times, this kind of pain is an indication that your ego is trying to prevent you from creating a change in the status quo. Whenever you are shifting and changing your circumstances, your ego will throw at you all kinds of fear and resistance. Its job is to keep you where you are, where it “thinks” you are safe. Breaking through this fear and resistance is the only way you will be able to change your status quo to something different and, I hope, better.
All this said, sometimes fear and resistance are actually there to protect you. Therefore, when you start experiencing psychic or emotional discomfort, you need to do some exploring and examining. Ask yourself these questions:
- What am I afraid of or resisting in this situation?
- What is behind that fear or resistance?
- Is what I am fearing or resisting real?
- Is my status quo truly better than the alternative I’m resisting?
You can do this kind of work on your own, especially using tools such as tapping or muscle testing. Other times, you’ll need some guidance or a third-party perspective. In those cases, you can enlist the help of a trusted friend, mentor or advisor. Or, you can hire a coach like me. Either way, don’t automatically give in to your fear or resistance. Dig deeper and uncover whether it is your friend or a foe disguised as a friend.
Now It’s Your Turn:
