Woody Allen once said that “80 percent of success is showing up.” But what does showing up mean? In order for showing up to bring you success, you need to show up in a variety of ways.

1. Physically

You need to show up in places where opportunities are present. This includes networking and educational events, but also in your business. You need to be at your speaking gigs, sit down at your computer, physically be in the place where you conduct business.

2. Mentally

You need to be present when you are communicating with others. This includes sessions with clients, shooting videos for YouTube and speaking with vendors, contractors and staff. If you are mentally checked out, you aren’t showing up.

3. Energetically/Emotionally

Your mindset needs to be supportive to your showing up physically and mentally. Some people might describe this as being spiritually or energetically present. Regardless of the terminology, your emotional energy projects through to those you are communicating with.

When you Own Your Awesome, you become increasingly masterful at showing up physically, mentally, energetically and emotionally. Does this mean that you show up 100% all of the time? No, but you know how to manage the variables so that you show up in the right ways at the best times for your personal path and journey. And you are consciously aware of when you are not able to do that.

Another aspect of showing up is vulnerability, which in business shows up as authenticity. Brené Brown, a research professor at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work., has done a lot of research on this topic and says that “vulnerability is about showing up and being seen.” And she’s found that fear is the greatest obstacle to being vulnerable. “It’s tough to [show up and be seen] when we’re terrified about what people might see or think.”

If you aren’t successful, perhaps you aren’t showing up in the right ways at the right times in the right places. Take a good, deep look at how you are showing up so you uncover ways to show up more effectively.
