Are missing out on joy
because you’re looking at the wrong things?

Sometimes a simple shift in perspective is all you need to experience joy and recognize how awesome you really are. For example, when I look in the mirror I see someone who looks ordinary and is carrying a bit too much weight. I’ve never really thought of myself as beautiful. But last month I had an interesting experience. I went to an event with my boyfriend where he was enjoying showing me off to friends of his. One person, a beautiful woman in her own right, told him that I was a “hotty.” And another young man gave him a high-five for landing such a beautiful woman. Not the reactions I would have expected from my limited perspective.

Today’s Journal Exercise:

Where do you think you might be missing the beauty and wonder in your life? Ask a friend or three to share with you the one to three words they would use to describe you. You might be surprised by how others see you.

We see ourselves every day, so we become “old hat” to ourselves. But others see us with eyes that don’t focus on our flaws. They see us with eyes unaware of the frenzied pedaling required to make the “duck of your life” glide across the water.

In your 31-Day Celebrate You! journal, write about your reactions to the words your friends chose to describe you. Do they make you feel uncomfortable, like an ill-fitting bra? Why? Do any of the words feel good and familiar, like your favorite pair of jeans? Why is that?
