“Music hath charms to soothe a savage breast.”
~ William Congreve, The Mourning Bride (1697)

After my ex-boyfriend attacked me last year, Pharrell Williams’ song “Happy” helped me heal. I would play it while I was in the shower and sing along, willing myself to actually be happy. It was slow, but it did work. So now I have a playlist in my phone of “Uplifting Songs” that I play while in the shower. This little ritual starts my day off right and puts a bounce in my step.

Today’s Journal Exercise:

Today you’re going to step away from the journal a bit. If you have iTunes on your computer or phone, or if your phone has a way to do this, create your own “Uplifting Songs” play list. If you can’t do that, open up a document and list links to uplifting songs that you find online (YouTube is a good place to start).

The rule of thumb for including a song in your Uplifting Songs playlist is that it:

  1. Has to make you feel good when you listen to it
  2. Has to have positive, uplifting lyrics

For example, “We Like To Party” and “Party Rock Anthem” really make me feel good, but the lyrics aren’t uplifting, so I don’t include them.

Once you’ve created this playlist, I challenge you to listen to at least one of those songs first thing in the morning — while you’re in the shower if you can. If you can take break and during your day to dance and sing along to one, that’s even better.

Now you can take out your journal. How did finding those songs make you feel. Did you listen to them? How did that make you feel?

To get you started, here are some songs that I have in my playlist.

“Best Day of My Life” by American Authors

The title itself sums it up for me. I like singing “This is going to be the best day of my li-i-ife!” to start my day.

“Be Okay” by Oh Honey

The opening lyrics were what caught my ear: “Fresh cut grass, one cold beer, praise the lord, we are here and now.” And then the repeating line — “Everything’s gonna be OK” — perks me up because, essentially, everything does always end up being OK.

“Celebrate You” by Corbin Bleu

When I started working on my book, Celebrate You! Own Your Awesome in Business and Life, I got the idea to look for a theme song to egg me on. I found two and it was Corbin’s upbeat, funky tune that won my heart.

I also recommend you grab a copy of Irene Boggs album AffirmaJams. I have both “Excuse Me” and “Today Is Gonna Be a Good Day” in my playlist. (You can download the latter for free in The Spiritual Mall’s Gift Bag.)

Share a link to one of your uplifting songs in the Facebook group and/or in a comment below. Let us know why you included that song, just as I did for the songs above. Feeling bold? Video yourself dancing along to one of the songs and share that! And be sure to include the hashtag #CelebrateYou.
