Yesterday was pretty low-key. I got some work done and then, to cap off the evening, my boyfriend and I made dinner together — bowtie pasta with sautéd onions, garlic and mushrooms; grilled chicken; and Newman’s Own Alfredo sauce. We enjoyed our delicious creation while watching a couple of episodes of Kolchak: The Night Stalker.

Kolchak was one of my favorite shows as a kid, even though I was rarely allowed to watch it for fear that it would give me nightmares and because it went on past my bedtime of 8:30pm. My boyfriend has the complete series on DVD and we’ve decided to go through them all.

We watched the two movies and the first four episodes a week ago and last night watched “The Spanish Moss Murders” and “The Energy Eater.” I’m delighted to see that, although the special effects are very 1970s and kind of hokey, the stories still stand up.

My boyfriend and I had a discussion about this. My theory is that the reason why the original Kolchak (portrayed by Darren McGavin) works and the remake with Stuart Townsend didn’t is because the original Carl Kolchak was an everyman. He was bumbling and ordinary. The audience could identify with him. However, in the remake Kolchak was given this big back story and there was a conspiracy that needed to be uncovered and he was quite morose and brooding. Who wants to identify with that?

Anyway, another day, another opportunity to get my geek on!
