OMG. I can’t even begin — but I will anyway — to tell you how totally awesome yesterday was.

As I mentioned in my last post, it was my birthday and I was planning on spending the day with my boyfriend on Catalina Island. I believed that’s what was going to happen all the way up until about 20 minutes before the surprise.

However, so you can appreciate the layers of awesome that yesterday turned out to be, I’ll share it in chronological order.

The Birthday Present
First up, my boyfriend hands me a wrapped birthday gift. I open it to find an Ultraman DVD and T-shirt. I grew up watching Ultraman and just loved it. Give me a Japanese giant monster movie (or show) any time! I see an Ultraman marathon (a la Kolchak) very soon in our future.

The Birthday Breakfast
Then it was off it IHOP to take advantage of my free Ruti Tuti Fresh & Fruity pancake breakfast. Turns out, I didn’t have to order that, they would just take off how much that was worth off the bill. So we had the double-dipped french toast combo. Delicious!

The Birthday Surprise
At this point, I think we’re driving off to catch the Catalina Express to spend the day on the island. We’re leaving a little later than I usually do, but I’m going with the flow. We’re chatting away and at some point I realize it is taking way longer to get there … and hey! we’re heading to Orange County! “Are we going to Disneyland?” I ask. Ug. Kind of spoiled the surprise. But now I’m just plain giddy and feeling like 40 years have just dropped off my shoulders.

The Photo 40 Years in the Making
I’ve loved Tigger since I was at least a toddler. And ever since my first visit to Disneyland I’ve tried to get a picture with him. Once, I saw him from afar but was not able to get to him before he disappeared. My boyfriend knew this and helped me find out where Tigger would be that day … and then we made a beeline straight there.

A Marvel-ous Time
Because Disney is now partnered with Marvel Comics, the characters from the Avengers movies were there for photo ops. The guy playing Thor was amazing! He looked the part and even had an accent.

At first, my boyfriend didn’t want a picture with Thor. When Thor asked me why he wasn’t in the picture with me, I told him that he just wanted a picture with Captain America. Thor looked at me, then stomped over to my boyfriend. “I hear you don’t want to take a picture with Thor!” he said. My boyfriend replied, “You intimidate me.” We all laughed and pictures were taken anyway. (Click on thumnails to see them larger.)

The Romantic Meal
The Pirates of the Caribbean ride is a must do for any trip I take to Disneyland. At the beginning of the ride, you float by the Blue Bayou restaurant. I’ve always wanted to eat there. I thought it looked so romantic. My boyfriend did not know this, but made reservations for us anyway. We got to sit by the water and wave at the riders. It was just as romantic as I had dreamed.

The Best Birthday Ever
They say Disneyland is the happiest place on Earth. Well, that was my experience yesterday. We leisurely walked around the park. Took advantage of the Fast Pass system to avoid long line waits. And just truly enjoyed ourselves and each other’s company.
