Are Your Ears Ringing?

According to experts at a recent marketing summit, your brand just might be talked about on social networks. Do you know what is being said?

At the Online Marketing Summit, held in San Diego this past January, social media was a hot topic, reported BtoB magazine. The event included a panel on social media, during which, marketers discussed the importance of getting started leveraging social media for your business.

“You can have a Twitter account and see what people are saying about your brand,” said Jodi McDermott, director of data strategy at Clearspring Technologies. “You can set up alerts and be notified when people say things about your brand.”

Steve Latham, CEO of Spur Digital, an interactive agency based in Houston, said, “You need to participate in online discussions. Your brand is being discussed — you need to know what’s being said.”

Of course, they were mostly referring to larger businesses, but I believe this applies to the solo entrepreneur, as well.

But it can be more than that, too. Social media can help you:

  • Drive traffic to your website,
  • Connect with your prospects, clients, and customers, and
  • Give you a needed breather between projects.

How you conduct yourself, however, can have an effect on your brand. So get an idea of what the rules are before you go out and blatantly blast your sales message.

Latham recommended LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter for business social networking. And, from what I’ve been hearing and seeing, this seems to be the general consensus. However, I also think you need to be aware of who your ideal clients are and hang out where they are. Perhaps MySpace or Ryze might be better for your business.

The February issue of Website Magazine listed the Top 50 Social Media Resources. Here are the top 10 from that list. Maybe this will help you in your social media research.

  1. You Tube.com
  2. MySpace.com
  3. Facebook.com
  4. Bebo.com
  5. BlackPlanet.com
  6. Tagged.com
  7. Imeem.com
  8. hi5.com
  9. Orkut.com
  10. Digg.com

Research for this list was based on information from Rankings.com.
